NHS Eye Tests
Professional eye care for eligible NHS patients
You may be entitled to an NHS-funded sight test depending on your age, medical history, family history or financial circumstances.
Eligible patients can receive their NHS sight test at our Bromley, Beckenham or Greenwich practices.
Who may qualify for a free NHS sight test?
You may be eligible if you:
- Are under 16
- Are aged 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education
- Are aged 60 or over
- Have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
- Are aged 40 or over and have a parent, sibling or child diagnosed with glaucoma
- Have been advised by an ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
- Are registered as partially sighted or blind
- Receive certain qualifying benefits
- Hold a valid NHS certificate for help with health costs
- Require certain complex lenses
Eligibility conditions apply and NHS rules may change. If you are unsure, contact us before your appointment and our team will help you check. Please bring evidence of your eligibility where required.
What does an NHS sight test include?
Your optometrist will assess your vision, check whether your prescription has changed and examine the health of your eyes. The tests selected will depend on your age, symptoms, medical history and clinical needs.
At the end of the examination, your optometrist will explain the results and advise whether you need glasses, further monitoring or referral.
The OCT scan is not included in the NHS sight test. It is not compulsory to have but is recommended. If you choose to have the OCT scan the fee will be £20.
Help towards the cost of glasses
Some patients who qualify for an NHS sight test may also be entitled to an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses. Its value depends on your prescription and eligibility.
Our team can explain how your voucher may be used and show you the available eyewear options. You are not required to purchase glasses from Glasseslab after having your sight test with us.

The staff at Glasses Lab in Beckenham are all very professional and I was very impressed by the optician who tested my eyes extremely thoroughly and took time to explain carefully what my options were for my new glasses .When choosing frames I was delighted by the selection and was encouraged to try on as many as I wished by Karolina who was able to advise me which frames would best suit my prescription.The only downside was that my new glasses took two weeks before they were ready but the wait was worth it as I am very pleased with my new glasses. There is a great range of glasses available and the team really help you choose what suits you and is the right frame for what you need.I ordered my glasses on March 29th and they were ready to collect on April 7th, just over a week later!Thank you!
